Description: Antique 19th c. Baltimore classical black painted and gilt decorated bench or settee with brass rosettes, circa 1820. This bench is based on a classical design by Benjamin Henry Latrobe made for the White House of President Madison. His furniture burned in 1814 but the original sketches survive. Has wooden cylindrical and upholstered arms, based on designs of Roman couches, a caned seat over deeply reeded and gilded legs,and original pressed brass mounts on the front feet. Now has custom green silk pad. Restoration to the gilt. This is a rare desirable form in Baltimore furniture. 26in H 78in W 21in D.
