Description: Pair of vintage spring form or bent steel garden chairs,early 20th century, in a design of curved vertical steel strips after a French design patented by Francois A. Carre of Paris, France in 1866 and introduced in America in 1870. These chairs are illustrated and identical to the French garden chairs shown in an engraving published in 'INNOVATIVE FURNITURE IN AMERICA from 1800 to the present' by DAVID HANKS, page 63, from the catalog of the 'Societe Anonyme des Hauts-Fourneaux & Fonderies du Val d'Osne, Paris' c. 1870. This type of chair was comfortabe with the flexable steel seats, and it continued to be popular in the 20th century particularly in the 1920's and was still manufactured in the 1940's. Description: Unusual antique Asian wicker and bamboo sedan chair. This is a chair to be carried by poles on each side by two men. The iron brackets to hold the poles are mounted on each side, but poles are missing. Seat is removable. Has wicker pillow headrest and side compartments. Circa 1890- 1900. 42 inches high, 27 inches wide and 28 inches deep. This chair would be an unusual focal point in a Asian or garden room setting. $250.

Description: Single wire work garden chair with high back, scalloped apron on sides and decorated with centered medallions on bottom apron. Late 19th century. 35 inches high, 17 1/2 inches wide. $295. By the mid-nineteenth century, furniture makers took advantage of technological advance in the manufacture of metal and began using reinforced steel wire first to make fencing and then to make chairs and benches that could withstand all climate conditions and were thus ideal for outdoor use. And because they were portable they were widely used from lawns to porches to interiors. Catalogs of ironwork manufacturers from the second half of the 19th century featured elaborate wire chairs, plant stands, etc in their general line of garden furniture.

By the 19th century, furniture makers took advantage of technological advances in the manufacture of metal and began using reinforced steel wire first to make fencing and then to make elaborate and fancy chairs, benches, plant stands etc. that could withstand all climate conditions and were thus ideal for outdoor use. Catalogs of ironwork manufacturers from the second half of the 19th century features all sorts of elaborate wire designs for plant stands, settees, bird cages and even cradles, all made of steel wire for interior and outdoor use.

Description: Pair high back steel woven wire work garden chairs, heavy weight with large oval seats bordered with a zig zag pattern apron, on shaped legs resting on curled feet. These elegant chairs make a graphic statement in any garden, garden room or porch setting. 41 1/2 inches high, 18 inches wide and 18 inches deep. Mid 19th century in America the machines were invented to extrude heavy steel wire which was first used for fencing and then elaborate garden pieces such as chairs, tables, plant stands, trellis etc. which were extremely popular into the 20th century for use indoors and out.

Description: Set of five cast iron classical design garden chairs, assembled set of three arm chairs and two side chairs, back splats decorated with a classical urn holding flowers and flanked by leafage swags, with iron rod seats, in recent black paint. Circa 1925 or earlier. This design is inspired by a garden chair design circa 1835 by Prusssian artist Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) for the Roman Baths in Potsdam Park; inspired by classical Roman examples which were discovered in the 18th century at Pompei and Herculaneum. The Boston company W. A. Snow Iron Works patented this design on Nov. 3, 1925 and illustrated it in their catalog. 30in. H. 19in. W. 18in. D. A bench and one arm chair in addition is also available in the same pattern. It thus would be possible to form a large set of one bench and six chairs in this classical design. Set of five $3500.

Description: Unusual and decorative 19th century cast iron garden gate and two matching fence sections, decorated with flowers, palmettes, spirals, and leaves. Has been professionally cleaned, primed and painted black. Gate 44 1/2 inches high and 38 inches wide. Two matching fence sections each 38 inches high and 88 inches wide. Total width of gate and two fence sections 214 inches. Installation posts would be in addition to this width. Ideal to fence off an area to make it a special site.

Description: Antique unusual round wire-work plant stand with intricate patterned border at the top, and scrolled and curled wrought iron legs ending in curled feet. In the 19th century machines were invented to extrude wire that was first used for fencing and then fanciful wire-work garden items such as plant stands,chairs and gazebos which became very popular for use in interiors and exteriors in the Victorian period. The foundries featured them in their catalogs along with cast iron urns and seating. This is a heavy round wire plant stand of that period. The round form is unusual. It has been stripped, primed and repainted a light green. 32 inches high 27 1/2 inches wide.
