Description: Chinese antique carved stone head of temple guardian or warrior figure that was found buried in China. Because of difficulties in unearthing the full body, only the head was removed. This figure would have been a ceremonial guardian for a temple or tomb and dates to the Qing dynasty. Head is 18 inches high, 13 inches deep, 7 inches wide. On custom stand. 24 inches high.

Description: Antique glazed terra cotta statue of Cupid after Etienne-Maurice Falconet's (1716-1791) marble 'Menacing Cupid' circa 1750. The original was produced by the artist for Madame de Pompadour and again for Catherine the Great. It became the most famous visual representation of Cupid in the 18th century. The original is in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. This glazed terra cotta statue is the same size as the original 32in H. 12in W. 18in D. Cupid or Eros was the ancient Roman and Greek god of erotic passion. He is shown warning the viewer to be discreet and yet his hand is ready to furtively draw an arrow from his quiver. Falconet's 18th century marble cupid statue was recently displayed in London in 2006 at the Somerset House in an exhibit entitled 'The Triumph of Eros: Art and Seduction in Eighteenth Century France.'

Description: Antique cast zinc statue 'The Sower', a young man sowing seeds, on plinth, painted white. Signed in casting "J.F. Milliet". Circa 1890. Jean-Francois Millet was a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. Millet is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers. Labeled on base "Fabrication Francaise, Paris". Excellent detail to the casting. 40"H. This would be a perfect focal point in a rural or farm garden setting.

Description: Fine glazed composition plaster bust of George Washington after Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828)signed on base G.Washington Houdon and on shoulder Alva Studio 1957. Houdon visited the United States in 1785 at the suggestion of Thomas Jefferson and arrived at Mount Vernon where he completed a life mask and terra cotta bust of Washington from which he made plaster copies. The original terra cotta bust was left with George and still remains at Mount Vernon. Houdon exhibited a bust of George in the Paris Salon of 1787 and 1793. Jefferson purchased a copy of this bust for Monticello. Houdon's interpretation of George Washington is considered the finest portrayal of Washington in existence. Bust is 23 inches high and 10 inches deep. It is displayed on an antique carved black marble pedestal with movable top. The pedestal is 42 3/4 inches high. Total height of the bust and pedestal is 65 1/2 inches.

Description: Pair of cast zinc griffin statues, late 19th century or very early 20th century. In old white paint over old green paint. In Greek mythology a griffin was a legendary beast with the head and wings of an eagle and body of a lion. The eagle was considered king of birds and the lion king of beasts. Griffins were also represented in the art of ancient Persia and ancient Egypt. 33 inches high, 12 inches wide, and 18 inches deep.

Description: Carved white marble portrait bust of Anacreon (570 BC.-488 BC.) an early Greek lyric poet, notable for his drinking songs and hymns. 19th century. The music of our national anthem, the 'Star Spangled Banner' written by Francis Scott Key, was taken from one of Anacreon's songs 'To Anacreon in Heaven'. In the 19th century a gentlemen's social and drinking club was formed in Baltimore and popularized this 18th century English drinking song. Anacreon is depicted here with tousled curls entwined with leaves and berries and with a mustache and beard of individual curling locks, denoting his wisdom and age. 18 inches high, 15 inches wide, and 11 inches deep.

Description: Magnificent pair of opposing large male lions with paws raised on top of spheres, of cast stone with quartz aggregate and white lime wash, with extraordinary detail. Circa 1900-1920. These are after the 'Medici Lions' (1589) standing at the Loggia Dei Lanzi Piazza Della Signoria in Florence where they can still be seen today. 42 inches high, 46 inches deep, and 16 inches wide. Provenance: Baltimore, Maryland estate. This important pair of lions would be outstanding flanking a major entrance or pathway. The 'Medici Lions' were commissioned by Ferdinando 1 de Medici,Grand Duke of Tuscany, and originally set in the Loggia dei Lioni at Villa Medici, Rome to ornate the villa's garden staircase. The basis for the design was an antique Roman marble relief. This was worked up as a full figure looking to its right by Giovanni di Scherano Fancelli in c.1598, and accompanied by a mirror-image version by contemporary sculptor Flaminio Vacca (1538-1605). The original pair remained in Rome until 1789, before being moved to Florence. They can be seen today at the Loggia dei lanzi in Florence.
