MONKEY MUSICIANS STATUES, PAIR, ANTIQUE Date: early 20th century Price: Please contact us for price Description: Pair of monkey musicians garden statues, antique cast stone with marble aggregate and weathered surface with lichen. One is playing a tambourine and one is playing a drum and both are dressed in fashionable 18th century costumes. These are very well modeled figures with fine detail. Very early 20th century. 23 inches high, 12 inches wide and 10 inch square base. These monkey musician figures are after the 18th century porcelain monkey figures created by Johann Kaendler of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory in Saxony in 1756. These also could be used as figural finials on gate posts or pillars which would be amusing and unusual in a garden. Examples of this exist at "Mount Stewart", the 1820 historic estate east of Bellfast,Ireland where there are dodos and monkeys bearing urns on their heads mounted on tall pillars displayed in the gardens. John Cheere ran a thriving lead sculpture yard at Hyde Park Corner in London for 50 years. Cheere had many important patrons and his prolific business in garden figures was at its height in 1740-1750. This figure with its very fine casting detail of the costume has provenance from the Penderyn estate, a 25 room mansion in Queenstown, Maryland, originally built for the son the the famed Chef Boyardee. 56 1/2 inches high.
