Description: 'Laurel' pattern cast zinc curved garden bench in original finish with weathered surface with green lichen and labeled on back 'Charlottesville, VA. Walker Fdy. Pat't pending. Excellent condition, with very heavy weight and nut and bolt construction, this bench would be perfect for a wooded or natural setting but could also be painted if desired. Circa 1920. 31 inches high, 42 1/2 inches wide and 29 inches deep. Three garden benches in the "Laurel" pattern of large leaf fronds with berries available, shown on this website under GARDEN/BENCHES. SOLD

ALMODINGTON BENCHALMODINGTON BENCH

Description: This Almodington bench is a document or exact copy of the earliest known wooden garden bench in America, made for Almodington Plantation house in Somerset County, Maryland, circa 1750. The design with a diagonally slatted four panel back was taken from an 18th century English design book and the bench was originally of local yellow pine. Benches of this type were called "garden seats" in the 18th century. This document copy is of yellow pine and is painted white, as was the original. Almodington probably had a pair of these benches facing each other at the porch entrance to the historic house facing the Manokin River on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The original Almodington bench is now in the collection of MESDA, Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts in Winston Salem, N.C. Ref: Almodington/ MESDA. 45 inches high, 96 inches wide and 29 inches deep.

Description: Three piece cast iron set in the fern pattern, wide 55 inch bench and two ample arm chairs, curved shaped seats, with indecipherable foundry name on rear of each piece. Early 20th century. American. Found in southern estate. The fern pattern was one of the earliest naturalistic designs originating in England with the Coalbrookdale Company in the mid 19th century and immediately copied by American foundries. Bench 33 inches high and 55 inches wide. Each chair 33 inches high and 24 inches wide.

Description: Salterini wrought iron table and set of six wrought iron chairs with curved cane openwork mesh backs and seats, and 'penny' feet. The table is decorated with scrolls and leaves and has glass top. These pieces have been professionally cleaned, primed and repainted in gloss black paint. Circa 1950. The heavy chairs are a very ample size for comfortable seating. Chairs measure 32 inches high, 18 1/2 inches wide and 15 1/2 inches deep. Table measures 30 1/2 inches by 60 1/2 inches. SOLD

Description: Twelve piece set of vintage spring form garden furniture, nine heavy bent steel arm chairs and three matching round tables after French design patented by Francois A. Carre of Paris in 1866 and introduced in America in 1870 and popular up to 1920's. The stylish and comfortable large arm chairs are in a continuous design of curved vertical steel strips with riveted construction and raised round springing seats centering a medallion. The three round matching tables have heavy plate glass tops. Early 20th century. Chairs 35 inches high, 26 1/2 inches wide. Tables 29 inches high and 30 inches wide. Set $2900.

Description: Vintage Swedish armillary sphere sundial, wrought iron, zinc, and copper in design of Atlas holding up the world. Design with the raised logo attributed to Sune Rooth, Swedish sculptor (1918-2008). Professionally cleaned and repainted. Mid 20th century. 31 inches high and 17 3/4 inches wide. An armillary sphere is an astrological model with rings representing the chief celestial circles and demonstrates the basic principal circles of astrological motion and time. It indicates solar time by the use of an arrow which corresponds to the Earth's axis. The arrow's shadow is cast on an equatorial band which is marked with the clock hours. They are usually placed on pedestals and make a beautiful sculptural focal point in any garden. Price of armillary sphere. $650.

Description: Chinese reverse painting on glass of young boy playing with frog, in original frame and wood backing. Very early 20th century. This was called 'verre eglomise' after a Parisian picture framer Jean- Baptiset Glomy (d. 1786) who used a technique of painting on the reverse of glass, originally attributed to the Chinese. This is a charming and unusual scene of a child playing in a landscape with a frog, with a mirror background. Excellent condition $300.
