Description: Rare horse tail hitching post, cast iron in the round, full height, mid 19th century. Designed as a horse tail looped and wrapped around a post of four ribs over shaft ending in circular bottom, used to anchor post in ground. American. 62 1/2 inches high. $1800.

Description: Venetian Grotto chair,shell form, by Brown Jordon. Cast aluminum in original finish with impressed shell back, over upholstered slip seat and on cabriole legs. Heavy weight. Unusual and charming design. Mid 20th century. 37 inches high, 19 1/2 inches wide and 17 1/2 inches deep. $375. This chair design is based on a chair found in Pompei, Italy. It was latter called a grotto or Venetian chair in the 19th century and was made of painted pine wood and silvered in silver leaf. This Venetian chair design was a great favorite of the French artist Matisse and he painted it in many of his works. Unusual and charming. Makes a big statement! $350.

Description: Pair of vintage spring form or bent steel garden chairs,early 20th century, in a design of curved vertical steel strips after a French design patented by Francois A. Carre of Paris, France in 1866 and introduced in America in 1870. These chairs are illustrated and identical to the French garden chairs shown in an engraving published in 'INNOVATIVE FURNITURE IN AMERICA from 1800 to the present' by DAVID HANKS, page 63, from the catalog of the 'Societe Anonyme des Hauts-Fourneaux & Fonderies du Val d'Osne, Paris' c. 1870. This type of chair was very comfortabe with the flexable steel seats, and it continued to be popular in the 20th century particularly in the 1920's and was still manufactured in the 1940's.

Description: Rare antique Asian wicker and bamboo sedan chair with wicker pillow headrest and side compartments. This is a chair designed to be carried by poles on each side by porters. See photo. Note that the iron brackets to hold wood poles are mounted on each side, but poles are missing. Removable seat has custom Thai green silk cushion. Circa 1890- 1900. 42 inches high, 27 inches wide and 28 inches deep. This chair would be a charming focal point in a Asian or garden room setting. $350.

Description: Single wire work garden chair with high back, scalloped apron on sides and decorated with centered medallions on bottom apron. Late 19th century. 35 inches high, 17 1/2 inches wide. $295. By the mid-nineteenth century, furniture makers took advantage of technological advance in the manufacture of metal and began using reinforced steel wire first to make fencing and then to make chairs and benches that could withstand all climate conditions and were thus ideal for outdoor use. And because they were portable they were widely used from lawns to porches to interiors. Catalogs of ironwork manufacturers from the second half of the 19th century featured elaborate wire chairs, plant stands, etc in their general line of garden furniture.

Description: Pair high back steel woven wire work garden chairs, heavy weight with large oval seats bordered with a zig zag pattern apron, on shaped legs resting on curled feet. These elegant chairs make a graphic statement in any garden, garden room or porch setting. 41 1/2 inches high, 18 inches wide and 18 inches deep. Mid 19th century in America the machines were invented to extrude heavy steel wire which was first used for fencing and then elaborate garden pieces such as chairs, tables, plant stands, trellis etc. which were extremely popular into the 20th century for use indoors and out.

Description: Set of four cast aluminum garden chairs, with swag and star backs and dolphin arm terminals. These chairs are a very ample size providing very comfortable seating. Early twentieth century. Illustrated in the original Florentine Craftsmen Company, N.Y. catalog, the former New York company noted for superior workmanship and quality in garden furniture for over 90 years. Florentine Craftsmen Co. is now closed. These chairs are of nut and bolt construction, not welded as done today. 30 inches high, 21.5 inches wide, and 20 inches deep. Set of four chairs $1500.
