Description: Pair of large opposing carved Vincenza limestone hound dogs or whippets. These have interesting form and stance with good detail, and mossy patinas. Early 20th century. Provenance: Part of New York collection for many years. 24in H. 28in L. Dogs are resting on plinths 10 1/2 inches wide and 27 1/2 inches long.

Description: Antique cast zinc statue 'The Sower', a young man sowing seeds, on plinth, painted white. Signed in casting "J.F. Milliet". Circa 1890. Jean-Francois Millet was a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. Millet is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers. Labeled on base "Fabrication Francaise, Paris". Excellent detail to the casting. 40"H. This would be a perfect focal point in a rural or farm garden setting. 40 inches high.

Description: Pair of seated cast zinc griffin roaring, with limbs symmetrical. This statue design was illustrated in late 19th and 20th century iron foundry catalogs such as the Mott Foundry in 1890. This pair is in old white paint over old green paint. An illustration of this griffin design is shown in "Zinc Sculpture in America 1850-1950" by Carol A. Grissom, page 432. In Greek mythology a griffin was a legendary beast with the head and wings of an eagle and body of a lion. The eagle was considered king of birds and the lion king of beasts. Griffins were also represented in the art of ancient Persia and ancient Egypt. 33 inches high, 12 inches wide, and 18 inches deep.

Description: Magnificent pair of opposing large male lions with paws raised on top of spheres, of cast stone with quartz aggregate and white lime wash, with extraordinary detail. Circa 1900-1920, found in Baltimore estate. Excellent condition. 42 inches high and 46 inches wide. These are after the 'Medici Lions' (1589) still standing at the Loggia Dei Lanzi Piazza Della Signoria in Florence where they can still be seen today. 42 inches high, 46 inches deep, and 16 inches wide. Provenance: Baltimore, Maryland estate. This important pair of lions would be outstanding flanking a major entrance or building. The 'Medici Lions' were commissioned by Ferdinando 1 de Medici,Grand Duke of Tuscany, and originally set in the Loggia dei Lioni at Villa Medici, Rome to ornate the villa's garden staircase. The basis for the design was an antique Roman marble relief. This was worked up as a full figure looking to its right by Giovanni di Scherano Fancelli in c.1598, and accompanied by a mirror-image version by contemporary sculptor Flaminio Vacca (1538-1605). The original pair remained in Rome until 1789, before being moved to Florence. Today they can be seen at the Loggia dei lanzi in Florence, Italy.

Description: Pair of monkey musicians garden statues, antique cast stone with marble aggregate and weathered surface with lichen. One is playing a tambourine and one is playing a drum and both are dressed in fashionable 18th century costumes. These are very well modeled figures with fine detail. Very early 20th century. 23 inches high, 12 inches wide and 10 inch square base. These monkey musician figures are after the 18th century porcelain monkey figures created by Johann Kaendler of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory in Saxony in 1756.

These rabbits were called "Wide Awake Rabbits" and were shown in 19th and early 20th century American foundry cast iron garden catalogs and illustrated as garden ornament. But very few foundries made graduated sizes of this rabbit form so this small size is rare. 9 1/2 inches high, 8 inches deep and 5 inches wide. $295.

Description: Lead statue of a shepherd with crook after the important 18th century English lead sculptor John Cheere (1709-1787). John Cheere ran a thriving lead sculpture yard at Hyde Park Corner in London for 50 years. Cheere had many important patrons and his prolific business in garden figures was at its height in 1740-1750. This figure with its very fine casting detail of the costume has provenance from the Penderyn estate, a 25 room mansion in Queenstown, Maryland originally built for the son the the famed Chef Boyardee. 56 1/2 inches high. Base 13 inches square. Early 20th century. This sculpture would be a beautiful focal point for any garden.
