Description: Fine glazed composition plaster bust of George Washington after Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828)signed on base G.Washington Houdon and on shoulder Alva Studio 1957. Houdon visited the United States in 1785 at the suggestion of Thomas Jefferson and arrived at Mount Vernon where he completed a life mask and terra cotta bust of Washington from which he made plaster copies. The original terra cotta bust was left with George and still remains at Mount Vernon. Houdon exhibited a bust of George in the Paris Salon of 1787 and 1793. Jefferson purchased a copy of this bust for Monticello. Houdon's interpretation of George Washington is considered the finest portrayal of Washington in existence. Bust is 23 inches high and 10 inches deep. It is displayed on an antique carved black marble pedestal with movable top. The pedestal is 42 3/4 inches high. Total height of the bust and pedestal is 65 1/2 inches.

Richard Bailey studied at The Arts Student League in New York and under the famous sculptor Jose de Creeft. He also worked and studied in Carrara, Italy, and Vermont quarries. He is now retired.

Description: Pair of monkey musicians garden statues, antique cast stone with marble aggregate and weathered surface with lichen. One is playing a tambourine and one is playing a drum and both are dressed in fashionable 18th century costumes. These are very well modeled figures with fine detail. Very early 20th century. 23 inches high, 12 inches wide and 10 inch square base. These monkey musician figures are after the 18th century porcelain monkey figures created by Johann Kaendler of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory in Saxony in 1756. These also could be used as figural finials on gate posts or pillars which would be amusing and unusual in a garden. Examples of this exist at "Mount Stewart", the 1820 historic estate east of Bellfast,Ireland where there are dodos and monkeys bearing urns on their heads mounted on tall pillars displayed in the gardens. Description: Opposing pair of large male lion statues with paws raised on top of spheres, cast stone with quartz aggregate and white lime wash, cast with fine detail. These are after the "Medici Lions" (1589) standing at the Loggia Dei Lanzi Piazza Della Signoria in Florence. 42"high, 46"deep, and 16 inches wide. Circa 1920. Provenance: Baltimore estate. The "Medici Lions" were commissioned by Ferdinando 1 de Medici, grand Duke of Tuscany, and originally set in the Loggia dei Lioni at Villa Medici, Rome to ornate the villa's garden staircase. The basis for the design was an antique Roman marble relief. This was worked up as a full figure by Giovanni di Scherano Fancelli in circa 1598, and accompanied by a mirror-image version by a contemporary sculptor Flaminio Vacca (1538-1605).The original pair remained in Rome until 1789, before being moved to Florence. They can be seen today at the Loggia dei Lanze in Florence, Italy.
