Inquiry about: MONKEY MUSICIANS STATUES, PAIR, ANTIQUE
Pair of monkey musicians garden statues, antique cast stone with marble aggregate and weathered surface with lichen. One is playing a tambourine and one is playing a drum and both are dressed in fashionable 18th century costumes. These are very well modeled figures with fine detail. Very early 20th century. 23 inches high, 12 inches wide and 10 inch square base. These monkey musician figures are after the 18th century porcelain monkey figures created by Johann Kaendler of the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory in Saxony in 1756. These also could be used as figural finials on gate posts or pillars which would be amusing and unusual in a garden. Examples of this exist at "Mount Stewart", the 1820 historic estate east of Bellfast,Ireland where there are dodos and monkeys bearing urns on their heads mounted on tall pillars displayed in the gardens.
