MEDICI URN, ANTIQUE CAST IRON, LABELED JANES BEEBE & CO. Date: Circa 1850 Price: Please contact us for price Description: The classic design of this urn is called the Medici Urn, after a marble bell shaped urn sculpted in Athens 1st century AD as a garden ornament and now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. This cast iron example of the Medici urn's bowl is decorated in high relief with Greek figures in a procession. The rim of the bowl is labeled with the the name Janes Beebe & Co. This 1850's foundry was located in Manhattan and then moved to the Bronx,N.Y. By 1859 the name was changed to Janes, Fowler, Kirkland & Company and they won the contract to replace the dome of the U.S. Capital Building with a new cast iron dome. The work was done at their foundry in the Bronx, N.Y. through out the Civil War. The Janes Beebe & Co. label dates this Medici urn to the 1850's. The socle of the urn on a square base is labeled Walbridge & Co. Buffalo, N.Y. so is a replacement. The urn has been professionally cleaned and repainted. 49 1/2"H. 23 1/2"W. SET OF TWO SCHINKEL BENCHES and TWO CHAIRS Date: Late 19th century early 20th C. Price: Please contact us for price Description: Rare large set of two cast iron benches and two arm chairs after Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) the Prussian neo-classical architect who designed this pattern for the Roman Baths in Potsdam Park in 1835. He was the architect to the King of Prussia. The design was influenced by the early Roman furniture discovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum in the 18th century. The motif of the back panel is a scrolled lyre flanked by classical winged figures. Note the ram's head arm terminals and cloven hoofed feet. Late 19th or early 20th century. Benches: 31 1/2"H. 44"W. 19"D. Chairs: 31 1/2"H. 25 1/2"W. These pieces have been professionally cleaned and repainted. The late fashion designer Gianni Versace also had furniture in this design in his showroom. A cast iron chair in this design by Schinkel is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and also illustrated and discussed in "Cast Iron From Central Europe" 1800-1850 from the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts and the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna.
