Description: Pair of unusual large cast iron garden urns, with lobed bowls and upright handles, antique, late 19th century 38"H. 24"W. These urns relate to French urns with similar handles shown in the circa 1870 trade catalog of The Societe Anonyme des Hauts-Forneaux & Fonderies du Val d'Osne, a group of designers and founders in France. J.W. Fiske Iron Wks. New York also made a similar urn with and without handles.

Description: The classic design of this urn is called the Medici Urn, after a marble bell shaped urn sculpted in Athens 1st century AD as a garden ornament and now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. This cast iron example of the Medici urn's bowl is decorated in high relief with Greek figures in a procession. The rim of the bowl is labeled with the the name Janes Beebe & Co. This 1850's foundry was located in Manhattan and then moved to the Bronx,N.Y. By 1859 the name was changed to Janes, Fowler, Kirkland & Company and they won the contract to replace the dome of the U.S. Capital Building with a new cast iron dome. The work was done at their foundry in the Bronx, N.Y. through out the Civil War. The Janes Beebe & Co. label dates this Medici urn to the 1850's. The socle of the urn on a square base is labeled Walbridge & Co. Buffalo, N.Y. so is a replacement. The urn has been professionally cleaned and repainted. 49 1/2"H. 23 1/2"W.

Description: Rare set of two cast iron benches and two arm chairs after Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) the Prussian neo-classical architect who designed this pattern for the Roman Baths in Potsdam Park in 1835. He was the architect to the King of Prussia. The design was influenced by the early Roman furniture discovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum in the 18th century. The motif of the back panel is a scrolled lyre flanked by classical winged figures. Note the ram's head arm terminals and cloven hoofed feet. Late 19th or early 20th century. Benches: 31 1/2"H. 44"W. 19"D. Chairs: 31 1/2"H. 25 1/2"W. These pieces have been professionally cleaned and repainted. A cast iron chair in this design by Schinkel is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Description: Fern pattern cast iron set of garden bench and two chairs. Early 20th century. This set has been professionally cleaned and painted gloss black. The Fern pattern was one of the earliest naturalistic designs from the mid 19th century English Coalbrookdale foundry designers, and which was then copied by American foundries. This is a bold pattern of large fern fronds, perfect for any garden setting. Bench 45"W. Chairs 24"W. The cast iron center table shown is listed under #16249. It measures 27"H. 23 1/2"W.

Description: Opposing pair of large male lion statues with paws raised on top of spheres, cast stone with quartz aggregate and white lime wash, cast with fine detail. Early 20th century. These are after the "Medici Lions" (1589) standing at the Loggia Dei Lanzi Piazza Della Signoria in Florence. 42"high, 46"deep, and 16 inches wide. Circa 1920. Provenance: Baltimore estate. The "Medici Lions" were commissioned by Ferdinando 1 de Medici, grand Duke of Tuscany, and originally set in the Loggia dei Lioni at Villa Medici, Rome to ornate the villa's garden staircase. The basis for the design was an antique Roman marble relief. This was worked up as a full figure by Giovanni di Scherano Fancelli in circa 1598, and accompanied by a mirror-image version by a contemporary sculptor Flaminio Vacca (1538-1605).The original pair remained in Rome until 1789, before being moved to Florence. They can be seen today at the Loggia dei Lanze in Florence, Italy.

Description: A reclining carved steatite stone dog by noted Delaware stone sculptor Richard Bailey. 9"H. 18.5" deep 7"W. This dog is carved from steatite stone found near the Conowingo Dam in Maryland. A charming sculpture to feature in your home or garden. Richard Bailey studied at the Arts Students League in New York, studied under noted sculptor Jose de Creeft,and later worked in Carrara,Italy and at Vermont stone quarries. He is now retired.
